SUMMIT - A tough, chippy match went in favor of Southwest Mississippi on Monday afternoon, as Northwest fell 3-1.
Nahuel Cruz got the Bears on the board in the sixth minute, but the Rangers buckled down and held Southwest scoreless until the late in the second half.
Trailing 1-0 early in the second half, Northwest finally got on the board, as a corner kick from
Dereck Gomez found the foot of
Ethan Peterson for the freshman's first career score.
Southwest Mississippi broke the scoreless tie in the 77th minute, as Kaleb Jones provided the go-ahead goal for the Bears. Southwest would add a goal in the final minute from Cruz, to solidify the 3-1 win.
Northwest was outshot 19-16 in the match and 9-6 on goal. Sophomore goalkeeper
Dustin Brown finished the afternoon with six saves for the Rangers.
With the loss, Northwest dropped to 0-2 on the season. The Rangers will return to action on Thursday, April 8 for the home opener against Meridian. The match, along with all home contests, will be held at the Senatobia Sports Park, located off I-55.
