LAFAYETTE, La. - Another member of the Rangers' 2020 championship squad has signed with a Division I program this week.
Northwest defensive lineman
Nijel McGriff made things official with Louisiana earlier this week, after the Ragin' Cajuns announced the signing on Monday via Twitter.
A native of Jacksonville, Fla., McGriff played in all but one game during his two-year tenure with the Rangers, compiling 56 total tackles and five sacks. The former Mandarin High School product tallied a career-best 13 tackles in a 16-14 win against Itawamba in the 2020 season opener.
McGriff initially committed to West Virginia ahead of his sophomore season, but also held offers from numerous Division I programs. He was named a First Team Fall All-American by JCGridiron.com and earned a nod to the All-Mississippi Gridiron team.
McGriff is the fourth member of the 2020 Northwest team to move on to the Division I level, joining linebacker
Desmyn Baker (Rice), kicker
Tucker Barefoot (Southern Miss) and offensive lineman
Zachary Bond (Samford). He is also the first Ranger to become a Ragin' Cajun since Terry Johnson in 2011.
Louisiana finished with a 10-1 record this season, capped off by a 31-24 victory in the ServPro First Responders Bowl against UTSA.
