Rangers Split with Northeast in Battle of Ranked Teams

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SENATOBIA - A solid outing at the plate helped No. 4 Northwest to a 13-3 win in Game 1, but No. 11 Northeast got the last laugh in the nightcap with a 14-4 run-rule victory in a Saturday split at Jim Miles Field.

Peyton Mills picked up right where he left off earlier in the week, hammering two more home runs to bring his season total to five. Colton Peel also delivered a complete performance on the mound in Game 1, improving to 2-0 on the season.

With the split, Northwest fell to 3-3 on the season with Northeast improving to an identical record. The Rangers will be back in action on Monday, February 8 at Coahoma in a 12/3 P.M. doubleheader.

Game 1 - #4 Northwest 13, #11 Northeast 3 (5 inn.)

Northwest scored a run in every inning of the Rangers' 13-3 victory against Northeast on Saturday afternoon.

Tucker Richmond's RBI-single got things going in the bottom of the first and the Rangers added two more runs in the bottom of the second with a Noah Hattier RBI-single and a sac fly from Peyton Puckett, making it a 3-0 advantage for Northwest.

Northeast pulled within a run in the top of the third as a wild pitch and an error gifted the Tigers two runs.

From there, the Rangers were nearly flawless the rest of the way. A two-run double from Landon Rogers and a two-run single from Hattier in the bottom of the third helped Northwest pull away to a 7-2 lead, and a pair of homers from Mills and Rogers in the fourth inning helped the Rangers jump to an 11-3 lead.

Although Shawn Dalton Weatherbee's solo homer gave Northeast another run, Richmond ended things in the fifth inning with a two-run single up the middle to solidify the 10-run rule.

Richmond finished 3-for-4 at the plate with three RBIs and Rogers went 3-for-3 with a double, a home run and four RBIs. Puckett and Hattier also accounted for two hits apiece, as Northwest finished with a season-high 12 hits.

Weatherbee finished 2-for-2 at the plate for the Tigers' only two hits of the contest.

Peel struck out five batters and allowed only one walk for the Rangers, while Cole Phillips was credited with the loss for Northeast after allowing two earned runs in just two innings of action.

Game 2 - #11 Northeast 14, #4 Northwest 4 (6 inn.)

Despite a pair of homers from Mills and Peeko Townsend, Northeast had the hot hand in Game 2, blasting three home runs and 11 hits in a 14-4 victory for the Tigers.

Following a scoreless first inning from both teams, the Tigers got on the board in the top of the second after a sac fly from Sheffield Anthony. Cade Spratlin quickly issued a Northwest response in the bottom of the second on an RBI-single, tying the contest at 1-1.

Jacob Compton made sure the tie would be short-lived however, as his three-run blast to right field in the third inning made it a 4-1 lead for the Tigers.

Mills' solo homer in the bottom of the frame cut the Northeast lead in half, 4-2, but the Tigers responded with four runs in the fourth to make it an 8-2 advantage.

Townsend delivered his first career homer with a solo shot in the bottom of the fourth, only for Northeast to go up 10-3 in the fifth off a home run from Ethan Dyer and an RBI-double from Gray Berry.

Dylan Hale's RBI-single scored Mills in the bottom of the fifth, but that would account for the final Northwest run, as the Tigers picked up four more runs in the top of the sixth to deny the Rangers a sweep.

Northwest finished with five hits in the contest, highlighted by the solo homers from Mills and Townsend.

Josh Basil led Northeast with a 3-for-3 day at the plate, while Berry and Compton finished with four hits apiece.

Hammer Franks was credited with the loss in his first start of the season, as the Mooreville native finished with two strikeouts and four earned runs allowed in three innings. Freshman Jake Savage earned three strikeouts in a relief appearance.

John Whiteside lasted 3.2 innings and earned the win for Northeast, despite striking out two batters and allowing four walks and two Northwest homers.
