SEATTLE – Despite going undrafted, former Northwest and West Virginia defensive back
Josh Norwood will still earn a shot in the NFL after signing an undrafted free agent deal with Seattle late Saturday afternoon.
Norwood joins former Northwest teammate
Damien Lewis who was selected by the Seahawks in the third round of the NFL Draft on Friday night.
A native of Valdosta, Ga., Norwood originally signed with Ohio State out of high school and saw limited action in 11 games as a redshirt freshman in 2016, a year where the Buckeyes finished 11-2 and earned a trip to the Fiesta Bowl.
Norwood transferred to Northwest in 2017 and became an instant starter in the Rangers' secondary, tallying 71 total tackles with five breakups, three tackles-for-loss and an interception while helping Northwest to an 8-3 overall record and a third-straight trip to the MACJC Championship game. His season-best performance came in the Graphic Edge Bowl against Iowa Western, where he earned 14 tackles and two breakups.
Norwood left the Rangers after earning first team All-MACJC and All-Region 23 honors, along with first team All-American honors from JCGridiron.com.
In his two seasons with WVU, Norwood played in 22 career games with 20 starts and 128 total tackles. During his senior campaign, Norwood totaled 10 or more tackles in four straight games, including a career-best 11 tackles against Oklahoma and Kansas before missing the final two games of the season with a shoulder injury he sustained while making an interception against Kansas State.
Norwood earned All-Big 12 honorable mention after his junior season and finished his Mountaineer career with second team All-Big 12 recognition.
Norwood is the 48th former Ranger to reach the NFL and the seventh player to make a stop with the Seahawks.
