HILLSBORO, Ore. - Postseason awards continue to roll in for Northwest following the Rangers' successful championship weekend.
After releasing the third and second Fall All-America teams over the last few days, JCGridiron.com has labeled redshirt sophomore quarterback
Michael Hiers and sophomore defensive lineman
Nijel McGriff to its Fall All-America First Team, the JUCO recruiting site announced on Tuesday morning.
In just six games in a Northwest uniform, Hiers completed 94 passes on 140 attempts with just one interception. The Birmingham, Ala. native and Murray State transfer passed for 13 touchdowns on the season and earned two MACCC Offensive Player of the Week honors after passing for 300-plus yards against Northeast and Holmes, becoming the first Ranger quarterback with two or more 300-yard passing games since
Jacob Free in 2018.
Additionally, Hiers was also named First Team All-MACCC North Division and MACCC North Division Offensive MVP. He finished the season with over 1,400 passing yards.
Although he entered the season as one of the few sophomores on a young defensive front, McGriff helped lead and establish the Rangers' defensive line as one of the toughest in the conference. The Jacksonville, Fla. native finished fourth on the team with 29 total tackles, while adding 4.5 tackles-for-loss, three sacks and a forced fumble.
McGriff's best effort came in the Rangers' season-opener against Itawamba, where he racked up 13 total tackles to help Northwest hold on to a 16-14 victory. For his career, the Mandarin High School product has earned 56 total tackles, 6.5 TFLs and five sacks.
Hiers and McGriff join second team selection
Vance Van Every and third team honorees
Jaquerrious Williams,
Jacoby Jones,
Tyson Keys,
Kylan Robinson,
Desmyn Baker and
Jarvis Townsend for a total of nine Northwest selections to the JCGridrion Fall All-America teams. Hiers, Williams, Jones, Van Every, Baker and Byron "Tank" Pearson earned first team All-MACCC accolades as well.
Northwest finished the season with a perfect 6-0 record and the MACCC and National Community College Football Championship titles following a 40-13 victory at Mississippi Gulf Coast. This marks the Rangers' first undefeated season since 2000, the fourth national title in program history (1982, 1992, 2015, 2020) and the 10th conference championship all-time.
