HILLSBORO, Ore. - As Northwest makes final preparations ahead of Saturday's MACCC championship showdown, six Ranger sophomores have been selected to JCGridiron.com's Fall All-America Third Team, the recruiting site announced on Thursday morning.
TailbackÂ
Jaquerrious Williams, receiver
Jacoby Jones, tight end
Tyson Keys, linebackers
Kylan Robinson,
Desmyn Baker and safety
Jarvis Townsend were all selected to the list, which will be followed up in the coming days with the second and first team honorees.
As part of a loaded backfield during his two seasons in Senatobia, Williams has found himself in the spotlight across the MACCC and in the national ranks as well. After a stellar freshman season that saw him earn conference and national Player of the Week awards, the Tupelo product has rushed for 314 yards and four touchdowns on 59 attempts as a sophomore, while also catching four passes for 116 yards and a touchdown.
Despite being part of a crowded unit of receivers, Jones has managed to stand out during his two seasons at Northwest. The Tunica native followed up his solid freshman campaign by hauling in 15 receptions for 171 yards and two touchdowns, despite battling injuries and playing in just three games this season.
Although his stats appear light on paper, Keys has played a formidable role on the offensive front at tight end, splitting the role with fellow sophomore
Drew Dabney. A Hattiesburg native, Keys has caught four passes for 29 yards this season, but it's his ability as an extra blocker that has helped the Rangers most.
A sophomore from Southaven, Robinson leads the team with 36 total tackles, five tackles-for-loss, two sacks and a pass breakup. He notched a career-best 13 tackles in the Rangers' season-opening victory against Itawamba on October 15.
As the team's second leading tackler this season, Baker has also emerged as another primary force at linebacker. A native of Clinton, Baker has accumulated 29 total tackles as a sophomore with 3.5 tackles-for-loss, two pass breakups, a sack, a fumble recovery, an interception and a blocked field goal that helped Northwest hold on in a season-opening win against Itawamba.
Hailing from Pearl, Townsend has stepped up with 22 total tackles, two pass breakups, a tackle-for-loss and a fumble recovery. Prior to the season, Townsend was listed as a national Safety to Watch by JCGridiron.com following a breakout freshman season that resulted in 38 total tackles, seven PBUs, 2.5 TFLs, a hurry and a forced fumble.
Second and first team selections will be announced later this week on JCGridiron.com.
Northwest and Mississippi Gulf Coast will tangle on Saturday night in Perkinston for the MACCC Championship. Tickets for the contest are sold out, but live coverage and live stats will be available on nwccrangers.com.
