SIKESTON, Mo. – It was an unfortunate weekend for the Northwest rodeo program at the TRC Championship Rodeo event, as neither team came away with any points from the event.
This marks the first event since the UT Martin Rodeo in April 2019 that neither team placed in an event.
Thursday evening provided the lone highlight for the Rangers as
Cade Cowan and his team roping partner Kolby Krieger (Three Rivers College) finished the first evening of competition in third place with a time of 9.9, only to be eliminated in the Friday night slack due to an unusually strong field of competitors that knocked the duo out of top 10 positioning.
Brandon and
Brennan Tomlinson also competed in team roping but received no score for not catching on the heel side.
Logan Tomlinson and
Gracen McClain both competed in breakaway roping but both were disqualified with no score.
Bull riding was not kind to the Rangers on Thursday or Friday, as
Jacob Hodges and
Jacorey Golden both suffered minor injuries in competition.
Cody Gilbert and Zachary Johnson also competed but received no score.
Sophomore
Caroline Crawford posted a clean run in barrel racing on Friday, but her time of 17.58 seconds was not enough to advance to the Saturday championship.
Mary Gracin Johnston finished with a time of 19.75, followed by a 20.4 time from
Gracen McClain, while
Anna Clair Johnston received no score after her horse broke pattern.
"We have a lot to work on before our next event this weekend," Northwest rodeo coach
Shelli Benton said. "We need to get our focus back and work on our mistakes. We are looking to finish the last two events of the fall season by bringing home some points and placing in more events."
Ozark Region standings have not been updated at this time but both men's and women's teams were sitting in ninth and 11th place, respectively, entering last weekend.
Northwest will hit the road once again on Thursday, Oct. 22 through Saturday, Oct. 24 at Southern Arkansas.
