MARSHALL, Mo. – Freshman
Caroline Crawford highlighted a solid performance for the Northwest rodeo program, finishing as the overall winner of the barrel racing event in last weekend's Viking Stampede event at Missouri Valley College.
Crawford's overall time of 27.32 was the best among seven other riders and gave Northwest 160 points on the women's side. She also took home first place in the short go-round with a time of 13.52.
"It was a rewarding experience to win that event," Crawford said. "Just being able to run my horse was an amazing feeling. I really wasn't expecting to win, so I am incredibly happy with my performance and I'm looking forward to competing again next weekend."
Allison Cratin also competed in the barrel racing competition on Friday night but a five-second penalty for hitting a barrel prevented her from advancing to the Saturday night finals.
Overall, the Northwest women placed sixth of eight teams in the Ozark Region opener. Host Missouri Valley ran away with the competition with 470 points for first place.
Northwest did not place in men's competition as
Ethan Keelin was bucked off in the bull riding events on Thursday and Friday evening.
Brennan and
Brandon Tomlinson also fielded a time of 12 seconds in the team roping event, but the result was not enough to earn them a berth into the short go-round.
Jake Brewer competed with EMCC's Kyla Matthews and
Cade Cowan teamed up with Cannon Smith (Three Rivers College) but neither duo was able to advance.
A weekend trip to West Alabama is up next for Northwest. The event in Livingston, Ala. is set to run from Thursday, Sept. 26-Saturday, Sept. 28.
