SENATOBIA – A record-setting day from Northwest sophomore goalkeeper
Tim Spencer wasn't enough to stop a 2-1 double overtime defeat to division foe Itawamba on Tuesday afternoon.
Spencer collected 14 saves on the afternoon, setting a new career saves record of 134, surpassing the previous total of 120 set by
Taylor Thevenot (2012-13).
After a scoreless first half,
Jake Heinze got Northwest on the board in the 51st minute off an assist from Cai Earhart, giving the Rangers a 1-0 lead.
Throughout a physical second half, the Rangers held the lead for the rest of regulation until ICC's Irvin Rodriguez tied the match with just 45 seconds left to go, forcing overtime.
Neither team was able to break the tie in the first overtime but less than three minutes into the second overtime period, the Indians would earn the game-winner as Rodriguez connected with Lando Nichols to deny Northwest its second division victory.
Itawamba outshot Northwest 24-8 for the match and 16-4 on-goal. Both teams also committed a combined 31 fouls, including six cautions.
Northwest fell to 1-4 on the season and 1-2 in the MACJC North Division while ICC remained unbeaten at 6-0 and 4-0 in division play.
Northwest will hit the road on Friday afternoon for a matchup at East Central at 3 p.m. Live stats will be available through nwccrangers.com.
