Pearl River Sweeps Northwest in Friday's Top 10 Matchup

POPLARVILLE – In an NJCAA Top 10 matchup at Dub Herring Field on Friday, No. 5 Pearl River swept No. 8 Northwest 11-6 and 11-5 to close out the regular season for both teams.

PRCC improved to 34-11 and 19-9 in MACJC play, handing Northwest its worst two losses of the year. The Rangers fell to 31-11 and 20-8 in the conference.

Both teams will host a Region 23 best-of-3 playoff series May 9-10. Opponents will be determined on Sunday.

Game 1 – Pearl River 11, Northwest 6

Shemar Page tossed seven strong innings and Dexter Jordan's three-run home run in the seventh broke open what was a 7-4 game as PRCC won the opener behind 11 runs off 14 hits.

Northwest led 2-0 in the top of the first on an RBI-double by Tanner Booth and groundout from Hammer Franks

PRCC scored four unanswered over the next two innings to take a 4-2 lead.

Kelton Hall's RBI-double made it 4-3 before another three-run inning for PRCC put the Wildcats up 7-3 and chased Parker Stinnett in his toughest outing of the season.

Home runs from Jordan and Reece Ewing put the game away in the seventh.

Ben Van Cleve and Peyton Mills homered to finish a combined 5-for-8 with three RBIs.

Game 2 – Pearl River 11, Northwest 5

Led by Noah Barron's five RBIs and a six-run fourth, PRCC won its seventh straight game over Northwest to close out the sweep on its Sophomore Day.

Dalton Fowler walked the first two batters of the game that allowed Barron's two-out, bases-clearing double to give the Wildcats a 3-0 lead after one.

After Franks' solo shot to center cut it to 3-1, PRCC scored two more in the second with two outs to extend the lead to 5-1.

A leadoff single from Franks and double from Ben Van Cleve in the fourth helped the Rangers pull within 5-4 before a six-run bottom of the fourth chased Fowler. Jackson Smith was also touched up for four runs in two thirds of an inning.

Hayden Leatherwood's 21st career home run in the top of the seventh capped the scoring.

All 11 Wildcat runs in the game came with two outs. Northwest had not given up double digit runs all season entering Friday.
