Timely Hitting, Strong Starting Pitching Leads Rangers to Midweek Sweep

MOORHEAD – Trent Bunting and Jake Tyrone struck out eight and allowed just one earned run in a pair of strong starts as No. 11 Northwest swept Mississippi Delta on Wednesday at the Jimmy Bellapanni Baseball Complex by 5-4 and 9-2 finals.

Northwest ran its win streak to seven games over the Trojans as they improved to 29-9 overall and 18-6 in MACJC play. MDCC fell to 15-23 overall, 7-17 in conference action.

The Rangers closed out a season-long eight-game road trip 5-3 with wins over three nationally-ranked teams in Hinds, Itawamba and Meridian.

Nine different Rangers picked up a hit in the doubleheader sweep, led by four hits apiece from Brayland Skinner and Tanner Leggett

Game 1 – Northwest 5, Delta 4

On the heels of an impressive start in a win at No. 4 Itawamba, Bunting was again outstanding in the opener. The freshman scattered six hits, one run and seven strikeouts in six innings of work and Colton Peel finished out the final 1.2 innings in relief.

Scoreless into the fourth, an infield error and single helped setup Peyton Mills' three-run home run to left to put Northwest on top 3-0.

A two-out rally in the fifth extended the Ranger lead to 5-0 as Mills and Kelton Hall drew bases-loaded walks.

MDCC's comeback started with a single run in the fifth and seventh on a pair of RBI-singles, making it 5-2.

Daniel Shelton came on in the seventh in relief of Bunting and allowed an unearned run before Peel ran into trouble in the bottom of the ninth.

A one-out, solo homer by Drew Pounders cut the Ranger lead to 5-3 before Devontae Rhodes' double made it a one-run ballgame. But with the tying run in scoring position, Peel struck out Matt Reed to end the Trojan rally.

The teams combined for 23 hits in the opener. Skinner was 3-for-5 in the leadoff spot to lead eight Rangers with a hit.

Game 2 – Northwest 9, Delta 2 (6 inn.)

In a game cut short due to darkness, Northwest jumped on top of the Trojans early and never let up to sweep the day.

Run-scoring doubles by Leggett and Ben Van Cleve and an RBI-single by Hayden Leatherwood put Northwest on top 3-0 in the first.

Hammer Franks would double and score on an infield error to extend the lead to 5-1 in the third.

Three more runs in the fifth, on one hit, put the game out of reach at 8-1. After two quick groundouts, a Van Cleve single, two walks and a plethora of wild pitches allowed the Rangers to plate three.

Tanner Booth added an RBI-double in the sixth to cap the scoring.

Northwest tacked on four more in the top of the seventh, but due to darkness, the game had to revert back to the sixth inning. Delta was unable to complete its at-bat in the bottom of the inning.

Jake Tyrone improved to 3-1 on the hill, scattering three hits and no earned runs.

Northwest will host East Central on Saturday in a 2 p.m. doubleheader to close out its regular season home slate.
