GOODMAN –
Kristen Perrigo was a combined 4-for-6 with two home runs and five RBIs and
Lacey Coats pitched 6.2 innings without allowing an earned run as Northwest split a softball doubleheader at Holmes on Monday.
Northwest won the opener 12-1 in five innings before the Lady Bulldogs responded with a 4-2 game two victory.
The Rangers will continue a busy week of games on Wednesday at Hinds and Thursday at home against Southwest Mississippi.
Game 1 – Northwest 12, Holmes 1 (5)
Behind three Northwest home runs – two from Perrigo and one from
Delta Claire Newman – and a seven-run fifth, the Rangers made quick work of Holmes in the opener.
Holmes loaded the bases in the first thanks to a pair of Ranger errors but Coats was able to work out of the jam by allowing just an RBI-single to
Laura Fields.
Perrigo's first of two home runs, after a
Brittni Beard single, put Northwest on top 2-1 after two.
After two more in the fourth, Northwest put the game out of reach with seven runs on four hits and three Lady Bulldog errors in the fifth. Perrigo had a two-run single, Coats had a two-run double and both
Madison Crosby and
Taylor Lott added RBI-singles.
Coats (5-8) went the distance in the circle, scattering three hits, two strikeouts and no earned runs. Mary Clayton Burrell fell to 3-15 in 4.1 innings of work.
Seven different Rangers had a hit and Perrigo and Coats finished with a combined eight RBIs.
Game 2 – Holmes 4, Northwest 2
Northwest stranded seven runners on base through the first four innings and could not pick up the clutch hit as Holmes rallied behind Teagun Barnes and Adyson Mann for the split.
Mann's two-run single gave Holmes a 2-0 lead after two before
Gracey Griggs' RBI-single cut the deficit to 2-1 in the fourth.
Barnes' two-run single to left extended the Lady Bulldog lead to 4-1 in the fifth.
Northwest threatened in the seventh, using a leadoff double from
Shelby Wilson and RBI-single from
Maddy Politte, but a game-ending 1-3 double play sealed the 4-2 win for Holmes.
Eight different Rangers had a hit in the nightcap as they out-hit Holmes 8-5.
