Gritty Ranger Effort Falls Short Against #10 Co-Lin

SENATOBIA – Northwest was able to take 10th-ranked Copiah-Lincoln to the brink on Friday afternoon, trailing by a single run heading to the seventh in both games, but the Wolves still picked up the road sweep over the Rangers.

Northwest fell to *4-25 overall and 3-11 in the MACJC, while the Wolves improved to 21-8 overall and 10-6 in conference play.

Game 1 – #10 Copiah-Lincoln 3, Northwest 2

A two-run bloop single to right field from Katie Brownlee allowed Northwest to pull within a run in the bottom of the fifth, but the Rangers couldn't get any closer as Copiah-Lincoln survived for a Game 1 victory.

Scoreless after two complete, the Wolves got on the board in the top of the third inning with a two-run double down the left field line from Hannah Walls.

Co-Lin would add another run in the top of the fifth with Harmoni Ashley's left field double to make it a 3-0 deficit for Northwest before Brownlee's two-run single in the bottom half of the inning.

Despite the added boost in the bottom of the fifth, Northwest was unable to land a base hit over the final two frames as Kaytlon Ward (11-5) held the Rangers in check at the plate to allow the Wolves to hang on.

Maddy Politte and Delta Claire Newman each finished 2-for-4 at the plate to lead Northwest.

Lacey Coats was credited with the loss, dropping her record to 4-8 overall with three strikeouts, four walks and two earned runs allowed. Brownlee tossed the remaining 4.1 innings with five strikeouts and one run allowed.

Northwest stranded seven runners on base, most notably with the bases loaded in the second.

Game 2 – #10 Copiah-Lincoln 4, Northwest 0

Sparked by a solo home run from Delaine McMillan, Copiah-Lincoln got three runs across in the top of the seventh to help seal a 4-0 victory in the nightcap.

Co-Lin struck first in the opening frame off Julie Scheurmann's sac fly RBI to right, but the Wolves were held scoreless over the next five frames thanks to a solid outing from Sarah Johnson, including five strikeouts against a walk.

On the other side, Makenzie Smith was also dealing for the Wolves, going all seven innings with five strikeouts and no walks allowed to garner her first win of the season.

Northwest had its best chance to score runs in the sixth inning, as Brittni Beard and Sarah Johnson hammered back-to-back base hits to move both runners in scoring position with two outs. The Rangers would be denied a tie or the lead, as Brownlee fouled out to first for the third out.

McMillan took the first pitch of the seventh over the fence in left center, paving the way for Scheurmann and Walls to send two more home and extend the Co-Lin lead to 4-0.

Aside from a Shelby Wilson single, Northwest was unable to get a spark going late, suffering the sweep to the Wolves.

Beard was the only Ranger to finish with multiple hits, going 2-for-2 with a double. Johnson fell to 3-4 in the circle with the loss.

Northwest will resume conference play on Monday, April 15 at Holmes for a 2/4 p.m. twinbill in Goodman.
