MAGNOLIA, Ark. – Sophomore Cade Cowan's performance in team roping helped lift the Northwest men's rodeo team to an eighth place finish in last weekend's Ozark Region event at Southern Arkansas University.
Cowan and his team roping partner, Cannon Smith of Three Rivers College, had an excellent 8.3 second catch at the Friday night performance, qualifying the duo to the championship round on Saturday evening. The two posted a 7.5 second catch that landed them at third in the short-go and third in the overall team roping average.
Brennan and Brandon Tomlinson also competed in team roping but received no time. Jake Brewer and event partner, Austin Roebuck (SAU) also received no time due to an illegal head catch.
On the women's side of things, Cody Dowell had a great run in breakaway roping, earning a 3.2 second catch. However, the freshman would receive no time for breaking the barrier, which added a 10-second penalty. Dowell did post a 15.9 second time in barrel racing and briefly sat in the standings at 10th overall, but a faster time disqualified her from further advancement.
Maegan Curtis, Allison Cratin and Caroline Crawford did earn some points for the women in the Friday slack. Curtis finished with a 19.15 time in barrel racing with a five-second penalty added for a hit barrel, while Cratin ran 17.91 seconds during her run. Crawford came in with a smooth ride and a SAU Championship Round qualifying ride of 15.66, but ran into some bad luck Saturday evening, hitting her second barrel resulting in a five second penalty to her time.
"We have one more rodeo this semester to wrap up the fall 2019 rodeo season," coach Shelli Benton said, recapping the weekend. "We look forward to getting some good practice in these next few weeks before our final event at Murray State before Thanksgiving."
With 420 total points, Northwest currently sits at sixth in the men's Ozark Region standings. The women's team is at eighth with 160 total points, ahead of Murray State and Mississippi State.
Northwest will compete in its final fall event at Murray State University from Nov. 21-23. The spring portion of the schedule will be released at a later date.
