Russell's First Career Double-Double Not Enough at Delta

MOORHEAD – Freshman Mallory Russell posted her first career double-double and Kayla Bradley scored 12 of her team-high 19 points in the second half, but it wasn't enough to overcome a late double digit deficit in a 78-70 loss at Mississippi Delta Tuesday night.

MDCC snapped a nine-game losing streak to the Lady Rangers to improve to 4-9 overall and 2-2 in division play, while Northwest fell to 7-8 and 2-3 in the north.

Northwest led 15-10 after one quarter but went ice cold in the second as MDCC rallied with a 10-2 run to take a 35-28 lead into the locker room.

Back-to-back 3-pointers from Sydney Liddell and Lindsay Hall to start the second half sparked a 16-5 spurt to help the Lady Rangers retake the lead, 44-41, with 5:04 to play in the third.

Kayla Bradley, Hall and Liddell combined to score 21 of Northwest's 23 points in the third to make it a field goal game heading to the fourth quarter.

The final 10 minutes belonged to the host Lady Trojans, as they shot a red-hot 60 percent from the floor and turned Northwest over five times in the quarter to push back in front.

MDCC forced three straight turnovers to start the fourth and used seven straight points from Erika Faulkner to build a 10-point cushion with 8:26 to play.

Northwest didn't go away quietly and battled back to 63-62 with 4:25 left thanks to buckets from Russell, Ariel Tunstall, Nakia Walker and Hall.

But that's as close as the Lady Rangers would get as MDCC hit key free throws down the stretch and pulled away late for a 78-70 win.

MDCC got a big night from its bench, outscoring Northwest 34-17, and forced 26 Lady Ranger turnovers.

Faulkner led three Lady Trojans in double figures with 20 points, while Bradley (19), Hall (13) and Russell (11 points, 13 rebs) led Northwest.

The Lady Rangers return home on Thursday night to host Holmes (6-9, 2-2 north) at Howard Coliseum. Tipoff is set for 5 p.m.
