Quiet Fourth Quarter Results in Lady Ranger Loss

SENATOBIA – Northwest sophomore Kayla Bradley collected her first double-double of the season (16 points, 12 rebs.), but a 17-7 fourth quarter run allowed Holmes to come away with a 70-67 victory at Howard Coliseum on Thursday night.

With the loss, the Lady Rangers fell to 7-9 overall and 2-4 in the MACJC North Division, their third straight loss. Holmes improved to 7-9 and 3-2 in division play.

After each team spent the first six minutes trading baskets, Holmes capped off a 16-6 run with a three-pointer from Jekalen Jones that gave the Lady Bulldogs a 29-20 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Despite giving up a quick layup in the early stages of the second quarter, Northwest dominated the second quarter from start to finish, outscoring Holmes 23-9 to take a 43-38 halftime lead.

As a result of the offensive outpouring in the second quarter, Lindsay Hall (15) and Bradley (13) went into the break already in double figures, accounting for 28 of the Lady Rangers' 43 points.

Northwest picked up right where it left off in the third quarter, embarking on a 10-3 run over the first three minutes and change, which was highlighted by a pair of threes from Hall and Madison Pharr. The run allowed the Lady Rangers to take their largest lead of 12 at 53-41.

Holmes continued to hang around however, slowly carving into the Lady Rangers' advantage and bringing the deficit down to just seven, 60-53, entering the fourth and final quarter of action.

The ultimate difference came as Northwest went scoreless over the first six minutes of the quarter, as Holmes took a 63-60 lead. Although Ericka Richardson would hit a pair of free throws to break the drought, the Lady Rangers still failed to make anything from the floor until Nakia Walker's fast break layup with 1:02 left to go.

Trailing by one after Walker's layup, the Lady Rangers gave up a Ja'Breonia Veasey jumper on the other end of the floor with 40 seconds left, which would prove to be the game-winning basket.

Northwest shot 39 percent from the floor in the first half, but were just 6-of-32 in the second half for 19 percent. Holmes also outscored the Lady Rangers 26-9 in points off turnovers, 36-17 in bench points and 34-18 in the paint.

Hall finished with 18 points and Pharr finished just shy of a double-double, scoring nine points and eight rebounds.

Holmes saw three players finish in double figures, led by 13 from Jones and 12 from Veasey.

Northwest will look to jump back in the win column on Thursday, Jan. 31 with a trip to Itawamba. In the teams' first meeting on Dec. 3, the Lady Indians came away with an 83-59 victory in Senatobia.

Tipoff for that contest is scheduled for 6 p.m. with live video available through nwccrangers.com.
