SENATOBIA – The visiting Southwest Bears spoiled first-year head coach
Mark Hogan's Ranger debut on Saturday, scoring two goals in the opening 4:45 to hand Northwest a 4-0 defeat in its season-opener.
Patrick Larsen netted both early goals for Southwest (2-0) and closed out a hat-trick with a goal in the 69th minute.
The Bears led 3-0 at the half, outshooting the Rangers 12-3.
The match turned physical midway through the first half, with the teams combining for six yellow cards and one Ranger being sent off with a red.
After only three saves in the first half, action picked up in the second with goalkeepers combining for 14 saves.
Northwest's best scoring chances came early in the second from sophomore
Parker Trawick, but Conner Smothers swatted away both.
Making his first collegiate start in net,
Tim Houston finished with 10 saves.
Northwest will hit the road for its next two matches, traveling to Jones County and Meridian.
