Jitaurious Gordon matched a career-high with 22 points, coupled with six assists and five rebounds, as Northwest survived a stout effort from Mississippi Delta on the road Monday night, 75-71.
With the win, Northwest pushed its winning streak to seven and improved to 18-2 overall and 9-1 in the MACJC north division. The Trojans fell to 8-12 and 3-6 in the division.
Gordon picked up a hot hand right out of the gate, opening the game with a pair of three-pointers to quickly give the Rangers a 6-0 lead.
After Mississippi Delta stormed back to tie the game at 11-11, sophomore
Clinton Moses drained a three-pointer and two free throws to spark a 15-3 run for Northwest.
MDCC managed to trim the lead back down to 29-23 with 4:41 left to go in the first half, but Northwest pushed its advantage back to double digits and was aided by a last-second layup from
Joseph Coleman that made the score 37-27 at the half.
Northwest jumped out to a strong second half start and led by as many as 17 points, but the Trojans used a 9-0 run to slice the Ranger lead to 57-49 with just over 10 minutes remaining.
Mississippi Delta remained within striking distance the rest of the way and were one basket from tying or taking the lead on two separate occasions. The Trojans were never able to get there, however, as a free throw from
Therrell Gosier II and a layup from
Tremont Robinson helped push the Ranger lead back to five with 3:26 left to go.
Khalil Strickland's jumper cut the margin back to three and gave the Rangers one last scare, but Northwest held firm down the stretch and earned the 75-71 victory.
Justin Flakes added 10 points off the bench as the only other Northwest player in double figures. Robinson and
Radarius Washington finished with eight points apiece, with Robinson adding six steals and seven assists to become only the sixth Ranger all-time to notch 100 steals and 100 assists in a single-season.
Xa'Vavier Jones and Deshaven Flowers paced the Trojans with 22 and 16 points, respectively.
Northwest shot 43 percent from the floor on the night and got 32 points from its bench, including seven apiece from Gosier and
Cameron Walker.
Mississippi Delta's strong finish to the second half allowed the Trojans to outscore Northwest in the paint (44-32) and second-chance points (18-7).
