Northwest Races Past Coahoma 96-86 to Clinch Division Title

SENATOBIA – Five Rangers finished in double figures, led by Tremont Robinson's 30 points and a double-double from Radarius Washington, as Northwest raced past Coahoma 96-86 in its regular season home finale Thursday night.

Northwest won its eighth straight game to move to 19-2 overall and 10-1 in the north to clinch its first division championship in 12 years and 13th all-time.

With Thursday's win, Northwest will also serve as host for the 2018 MACJC Men's and Women's Conference Tournament Feb. 26-March 1.

Coahoma scored the game's first basket, but the Rangers never trailed the rest of the night after pushing ahead on baskets from Jitaurious Gordon and Therrell Gosier II.

Robinson scored 21 of his 30 points in the first half as Northwest shot a ridiculous 70 percent from the floor to open up a 59-34 halftime cushion.

The Ranger lead was 81-54 with 10:29 to play before Coahoma mounted a huge comeback effort.

The Tigers rattled off 10 straight points as part of a 23-6 run to get within 87-77 with 2:48 to play. Malik Bailey single handedly shot Coahoma back in it, scoring 23 of his game-high 32 in the second half.

Five straight points from Robinson and a layup by Justin Flakes increased the lead back to 17 before another 9-0 Tiger spurt brought the lead down to just 94-86 with 30 seconds left.

Two missed free throws and two missed shots for Coahoma allowed R. Washington to ice the game at the line seconds later for a 10-point Ranger win.

Northwest shot 57 percent for the night against 41 percent for Coahoma and had 26 assists on 37 made field goals.

Behind 30 from Robinson, R. Washington added 12 points and 13 boards, Gosier had 11 and both Gordon and Miles Washington finished with 10.

Northwest will make its final road trip of the regular season on Thursday, Feb. 22, traveling to Itawamba for an 8 p.m. tipoff. The game will be carried live on letsgoicctv.com.
