BOONEVILLE – A career-high 22-point performance from sophomore
Chrissah Shaw was not enough to topple Northeast in an 80-62 road loss Thursday night at Bonner Arnold Coliseum.
Northwest trailed by as many as 18 in the third quarter, but cut the deficit to eight, before the Lady Tigers pulled away for good with a 20-point fourth quarter.
Northwest stumbled out of the gate and fell behind 7-0 less than two minutes into the first quarter, but a six-point scoring stretch from Mercades Ward helped bring the Lady Rangers back to take a 15-14 lead.
After a couple quick baskets from Adryana Bell, Northeast pushed its lead back to four points early in the second quarter before back-to-back buckets from
Abbreanna Miller tied the game once again at 23-all.
With the game tied at 29-all midway through the second, Northeast closed the final 5:14 of the first half on a 15-2 scoring run to take a 44-31 lead into the locker room.
Leading 52-34 in the early stages of the second half, Northwest slowly managed its way back into striking distance with an 18-8 scoring run over the rest of the third quarter, cutting the Northeast lead down to 60-52 entering the final quarter.
That would be as close as Northwest would come to reclaiming the lead, however, as the Lady Rangers shot just 12 percent in the fourth quarter, allowing Northeast to pull away for the 80-62 win.
Shaw's 22 points matched her career-high previously set last season against East Mississippi. The Horn Lake native also led the team with eight rebounds.
Miller and Ward combined for 11 points apiece in the losing effort for Northwest, while Aundrea Adams and Cherelle Jones led host Northeast with 16 and 14 points, respectively.
Northeast outrebounded the Lady Rangers 57-37 and outscored Northwest 21-9 in second chance points.
Northwest (5-6, 1-1) will resume MACJC North Division competition at Holmes (7-4, 2-0) on Tuesday, Jan. 16. Tipoff is slated for 6 p.m.in Goodman and the game will be live streamed at holmesccmedia.com.
