Rangers Fall in Extras to Pearl River to End Regional Run

ELLISVILLE – Facing Pearl River in an elimination game Friday afternoon on day three of the NJCAA Region 23 Tournament, Northwest squandered three leads, including a 7-4 lead in the eighth, as the Wildcats rallied to force extra innings and eventually knocked off the Rangers 10-8 in 10 innings.

Northwest's season came to a close at 32-19 overall, while PRCC advances to play Hinds in a region semifinal game later tonight at 8 p.m.

Back-to-back singles by David Herrington and Dakota Dailey and a walk to Aaron Campbell loaded the bases in the bottom of the first with no outs and the Rangers would eventually capitalize to take a 4-0 lead after one. Two Wildcat errors, a passed ball and Brooks Boolos RBI-single highlighted the inning.

PRCC (29-19) immediately responded with a four-spot in the second to knot the game at 4-4, plating three of its four runs with two outs. Noah Nicoud's RBI-single to left started the big inning and Simon Landry's two-run single to left plated the tying runs.

Both Dalton Minton and Parker Dungan settled in on the mound for their respective teams and hung zeros in the third, fourth and fifth innings to keep it a tie game.

Spencer Cayten's two-run double to right just inside the foul pole put the Rangers on top 6-4 in the sixth, scoring both Campbell and Dailey. The lead was 7-4 after seven when Boolos singled, advanced to third on Brody Catt's double and scored on an error, but the Rangers stranded the bases loaded to end the inning (13 LOB for the game).

Facing one of the top closers in the nation in J.G. Lipscomb, PRCC rallied with three runs off him in the eighth to knot the game again at 7-7. John Moore and Bryson Medious had RBIs to make it 7-6 before the Wildcats plated the tying run on a failed pickoff attempt at first base that scored pinch runner Billy Cox from third.

Northwest found the go-ahead run again in the eighth, using singles by Grant McMinn and Boolos before Catt's sac fly to left made it an 8-7 Ranger lead after eight.

Nathan Harrison relieved Lipscomb to start the ninth and allowed the tying run on Austin Moffett's one-out double to left to make it 8-8. He got a fielder's choice and fly out to end the Wildcat threat with two runners on.

Northwest went quietly in the ninth and the game went into extra innings tied 8-8.

PRCC used back-to-back triples to lead off the 10th and an infield single to take a 10-8 lead and the Rangers were fortunate to throw two runners out at second to eventually strand two more Wildcats.

Campbell's leadoff double in the bottom of the 10th put the tying run at the plate, but three consecutive fly outs ended a chance at extending the game. Grant McMinn's fly out to right-center with one down was caught at the wall on what would've been the game-tying two-run home run.

Luke Bradley (4-0) tossed two scoreless innings in relief for PRCC to get the win while Harrison (3-6) allowed three runs in the ninth and 10th to take the loss.

Northwest finished with 16 hits, paced by a 4-for-6 game from Herrington which helped him tie Taylor Walker's single-season record of 77 hits and career record of 135 hits. Campbell and Boolos were both 3-for-5 with Cayten going 2-for-6 with a team-high three RBIs.
