East Central Rallies Late to Top Northwest, 87-83

DECATUR – Leading by 10 after three quarters on the road at East Central, Northwest was outscored 27-13 the final 10 minutes as the Lady Warriors rallied for an 87-83 victory at Brackeen-Wood Gymnasium Monday night.

ECCC improved to 2-0 on the young season, while Northwest dropped to 1-1. It was the first meeting between the teams since 2012. 

Sophomores Shelbi Buford and Chrissah Shaw put on a 3-point clinic, combining for eight of the Lady Rangers' 13 makes on the night. 

Northwest trailed 23-17 after a quarter and 43-42 at the half, but rallied to outscore ECCC 28-17 to take a 70-60 lead after three quarters. 

Fighting through foul trouble all night, Astraea Moore, Nakia Walker and Shaw all fouled out in the final quarter to jumpstart the Lady Warriors' comeback. Northwest was whistled for 30 fouls against just 16 for the home team.

Six Lady Warriors finished in double figures, led by Sharan Turner (16 points, 19 rebounds) and Diamond Wraggs (15 points, 13 rebounds) who took over in the fourth.

Northwest outshot ECCC 44 to 36 percent from the floor but got to the stripe only 14 times against 40 for ECCC. The Lady Rangers were held to two second half free throw attempts, while ECCC shot 25 in the second half. 

Buford had 18 points, Shaw added 16 and Tamaria Thomas finished with eight points and eight boards to lead Northwest. Moore had seven points. 

Northwest will return to action on Monday, Nov. 13 at ASU Mid-South. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
