RIDGELAND – Freshmen
Nick Roberts and
Isvi Torres combined to save the day for Northwest Friday at Holmes, as Torres scored the golden goal off Roberts' free kick in a 2-1 overtime victory.
With the win, Northwest avenged last month's division loss in Senatobia and improved to 2-5-1 on the season, 1-4 in the division. Holmes, meanwhile, dropped to 3-7 and 2-4 in the MACJC North.
Freshman
Fleurit Madjitoloum delivered the first blow for the Rangers in the 23rd minute, his second goal of his Northwest career.
Holmes responded with momentum in the waning minutes of the first half, as Rolando Sanchez connected with Jacob McNeely to tie the match at 1-1.
Both teams cranked up the offensive intensity in the second half, but neither team was able to break the tie in regulation.
Just when it seemed like a second overtime period was in store, a Holmes foul helped set up a Northwest free kick. Roberts then sent a booming kick toward the net and right to Torres, who knocked it in for his second game-winner and third goal of the season in the 99th minute.
Much like last month's battle in Senatobia, both teams played with fierce intensity with a combined 29 fouls and one caution issued between the two teams.
Holmes finished ahead 21-13 in the final shot tally, but only 10-7 on goal.
Freshman keeper
Carson Tackett finished with nine saves for the Rangers.
Northwest will host East Central on Wednesday, Oct. 11 at 3 p.m. Live stats will be available through
