SENATOBIA – Northwest freshman right-hander
Peyton Plumlee signed a national letter of intent late Wednesday night to play baseball at Mississippi State next season.
A 6-foot-3, 195-pound product of Lewisburg High School, Plumlee was named the Region 1-5A Player of the Year as a senior and was selected to play in the North Mississippi/West Tennessee All-Star Game.
Plumlee received interest from Ole Miss, USM, Alabama, Memphis and others before inking with the Bulldogs.
"I've been waiting for this opportunity my whole life and am grateful it came along as quick as it did," Plumlee said. "I grew up an Ole Miss fan, but when Mississippi State hired a new pitching coach, I fell in love with him (Wes Johnson) and blended in with the MSU family well. I'm looking forward to getting down there and getting to work."
Plumlee is 4-1 with a 4.29 ERA and combined shutout in six starts this season for the Rangers. He's struck out 29 against 11 walks in 31 innings of work and opponents are hitting .294 against him.
The Olive Branch native is the fourth Ranger to ink with a four-year school so far this season along with
LeeMarcus Boyd (USM),
Colt Smith (USM) and
Hunter Lacefield (Mississippi College).
Northwest averages 7-8 four-year signees per year and has a
lengthy list of next year players.
