SENATOBIA – Trailing by 15 with under 5 minutes left in the third quarter, Northwest rallied to tie the game thanks to a pair of touchdowns and
Jim Speights' short field goal and then benefited from a missed Hinds PAT in overtime to hang on for a thrilling, 38-37 win Thursday night at Bobby Franklin Field.
Northwest, ranked 7th nationally, stayed unbeaten at 5-0, knocking off its third ranked opponent this season. Hinds, ranked 14th, suffered its second heart-breaking loss in the game's final seconds to drop to 3-2.
The Hinds quarterback duo of TR Page and Jaquez Parks gave the Rangers problems all night, tucking the ball and running out of pressure for big first downs and three touchdowns on the ground.
But it was a 6-yard pass from Parks to Jahmmir Taylor late in the first quarter that gave Hinds a 7-0 lead after one. The score was setup by a 31-yard interception return by DeCory McGee down to the Northwest 10-yard line.
Speights' first of three field goals, a career-long, 43-yarder early in the second quarter, made the score 7-3 Eagles.
The teams would then exchange touchdowns on their ensuing drives, with Page rushing in for a 1-yard score and
Justin Crawford scoring from 3 yards out after a long pass completion from
Gardner Minshew to
Ryan Golden.
Hinds extended its lead to 21-10 after an 8-play, 70-yard drive, capped by a 10-yard touchdown run by Parks.
Speights' 36-yard field goal as time expired cut it to a 21-13 Hinds lead at the half.
After Northwest came up short on its first three drives of the third quarter, including a 4th-and-5 at the Eagles' 45-yard line, Hinds caught the Rangers sleeping and bombed a 55-yard pass from Parks to Taylor to make it 28-13.
Facing its largest deficit all season, Northwest did not panic but instead responded with back-to-back scoring drives to tie the game at 28-28 after three quarters.
Minshew caught fire, going 7-for-7 for 99 yards and a 24-yard touchdown pass to
Marquisian Chapman. Crawford added an 8-yard scoring run, breaking the school's all-time rushing record on the same play.
Mason Sollie's 27-yard field goal with 4:56 to play put Hinds back in front, 31-28, but Speights would respond with an 18-yard field goal with 51 ticks left to send the game into overtime tied 31-31.
In the overtime period, Hinds won the toss and elected to go on defense first.
Northwest scored on just two plays as Minshew hit
Jacob McCrary for a 20-yard connection and then Crawford added his third rushing touchdown of the night from 5 yards out.
Hinds responded with a 4-play, 25-yard drive, as Parks flipped in from 4 yards out. But the ever so important point after attempt from Sollie sailed wide left after a bad snap, allowing the Rangers to escape with a come-from-behind, 38-37 win.
Hinds outgained Northwest 484-399 on the night and held the Rangers to 2-of-11 on third down.
Parks was 10-for-21 for 164 yards with four total touchdowns (two passing, two rushing) while Page was 8-of-15 for 75 yards and also carried it 22 times for 127 yards and a score.
Minshew completed 21-of-36 passes (13-18, 165 yards, TD second half) for 262 yards and a touchdown/interception, connecting with five different receivers. McCrary had five grabs for 93 yards, followed by Golden with five for 79 and Chapman with five for 57 and a score.
Crawford broke the school's all-time rushing record and finished the night with 22 carries for 117 yards and three scores. He added four grabs for 19 yards.
Defensively, Northwest pushed its sack total to 18 on the year, and was led by
Malik Hawkins with a game-high 11 tackles.
Steven Bradley had eight tackles and a pick, followed by
Alfred Dickens,
Quondarius Qualls and
Devante Davis with seven tackles apiece.
Northwest will host Holmes (2-3, 1-1) on Saturday, Oct. 3 at 2 p.m. for Homecoming.
