Gardner Minshew threw for 306 yards and four touchdowns and sophomore standout
Justin Crawford accounted for 244 all-purpose yards and four scores in the No. 10 Rangers' rout of Northeast, 51-14, Thursday night at Bobby Franklin Field.
Northwest snapped a two-game losing streak to the Tigers and is out to its best start since the 2012 season at 3-0 overall (1-0 north). Northeast dropped to 0-3 and 0-1 in division play.
After forcing a Northeast punt on its opening possession of the game, Northwest needed just four plays and 1:07 to find the end zone as Minshew connected with Crawford for a 62-yard touchdown and 7-0 lead.
The Rangers would add touchdowns on each of their next three drives to jump out to a 28-0 lead less than a minute into the second quarter.
Minshew threw scoring passes of 22 yards to
Ryan Golden and 44 yards to Crawford in a quarter where Northwest outgained Northeast 226-49. Crawford added a 49-yard touchdown run.
Northeast cut the lead in half with consecutive scoring drives, making it a 28-14 game with 3:22 left in the half. Kendrick Doss hit Khalid Kornegay from 26 yards out and later rushed in from 38 yards away.
Jim Speights' career-long, 41-yard field goal, his first of three on the night, made it 31-14 at the half.
Crawford's 55-yard touchdown run on the Rangers' opening drive of the third quarter and Minshew's 49-yard strike to Golden quickly extended the lead to 45-14 after three quarters.
Speights then connected on field goals of 38 and 33 yards to make the final margin 51-14.
Northwest outgained Northeast 603-336 on the night, a new season-high for the Rangers.
Minshew finished 19-of-25 for 306 yards and four scores, connecting with Golden eight times for 142 yards and two touchdowns and Crawford twice for 106 yards and two scores in addition to his 138 rushing yards and two touchdowns.
Shea Chism was 2-for-4 for 44 yards in the fourth quarter.
Defensively,
Malik Hawkins had a game-high nine tackles, two tackles-for-loss and a sack.
Willie McCaleb had seven tackles, a breakup and four hurries. Both
Kris Reliford and
Raheim Avery were credited with forced fumbles.
Northwest will travel to Itawamba (2-1, 1-0) next week. Kickoff is set for Thursday, Sept. 17 at 7 p.m. in Fulton.
