SUMMIT – Northwest and Southwest Mississippi played to a 1-1 double overtime draw in a very physical and hard-fought season-opener for both teams Saturday.
Southwest took a 1-0 lead in the 37th minute when Tristan Garriga scored from the six off a left-footed pass from Whit Davis. The one-goal advantage held true for nearly 30 minutes.
Sophomore
Armando Barron helped the Rangers even the match in the 65th minute, firing a rocket shot into the back of the net off a free kick.
The score held up until the end of regulation and through two, 10-minute overtime periods to finish in a tie.
Northwest outshot Southwest 20-12 on the day and owned an 11-5 advantage in shots-on-goal. Bryant Boyington picked up 10 saves for the Bears against four for Ranger keeper
Matthew Williams.
Northwest will return to the pitch on Saturday, Aug. 29 at 4 p.m., playing host to Jones County.
