SENATOBIA – Northwest and Northeast split a softball twinbill on Wednesday afternoon, with the Rangers rallying from a four-run deficit after two innings to win the opener 9-6 and the visiting Lady Tigers scoring eight runs over the final two innings to win the nightcap, 9-5.
Northwest improved to 17-5 overall and 13-3 in the north while Northeast moved to 15-10-1 and 10-6 in the division. The Rangers also picked up two forfeit wins earlier in the day via Coahoma.
(Game 1) Trailing 5-1 after three innings, Northwest cut the deficit in half in the fourth when
Heath Griffith and
Micalah Beall came around to score off an error at shortstop.
Northwest then took its first lead in the fifth, plating three runs off two hits and two more Lady Tiger errors. After two, quick outs,
Kendall Alford's double scored
Hanna Hunter and Alford came around to score off a double steal to tie the game. Griffith then reached off an error at short, scoring pinch runner
Christina Berryhill.
Northeast tied the game at 6-6 in the sixth, using Avery Springer's RBI-triple to right with two down.
A three-run bottom of the sixth gave the Rangers the win, sending eight batters to the plate and plating three.
Brittany Rochelle's infield single to short scored the go-ahead run, with Hunter following with a sac fly and Alford plating the final run off a fielder's choice.
Jessica Holliday (5-1) grabbed the win in 3.1 innings of middle relief for Beall, scattering three hits, three strikeouts and no runs.
Kiley Dunagan (1) got the save by throwing the final two frames.
Both teams finished with 10 hits. Alford, Rochelle and Beall combined to go 7-for-11 for the Rangers.
(Game 2) Northwest was cruising along in the finale, leading 4-1 after five, before the Lady Tigers caught absolute fire.
Olivia Owen's RBI-single gave the Rangers a 1-0 lead after two. After Northeast tied it, Northwest took a 4-1 lead on a two-run double to center by Alford and Griffith sac fly.
Northeast scored eight runs off 12 hits in the sixth and seventh innings alone and had seven consecutive hits in the sixth, including a pair of two-run home runs from Yasmeen Cooper and Madison Gillean.
Northwest scored one in the seventh off Beall's double but stranded the bases loaded.
The teams combined for 14 runs off 26 hits in the nightcap. Chelsea Gates was 3-for-4 and finished the day 7-for-8 for Northeast. Beall and Alford combined to go 9-for-15 for Northwest.
Northwest will host Jackson State on Tuesday, April 7 at 2 p.m.
