Rangers, Lady Indians Split Division Showdown

SENATOBIA – With a great crowd on hand, Northwest and Itawamba split a doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon, with the Lady Indians taking a 4-1 win in the opener and Northwest scoring two in the 10th inning of Game 2 for a thrilling, 3-2 come-from-behind win.

Northwest moved to 11-3 overall and 7-1 in the north while ICC moved to 17-7 and 9-1 in the division.

(Game 1) After a scoreless first two innings, Itawamba put up four runs over the ensuing three frames to take a 4-0 lead after five.

A leadoff single for Autumn Bonner in the third allowed pinch runner Taylor Thornton to score two batters later. Thornton advanced to second on a sac bunt, third off a balk and scored the first run of the game off a wild pitch.

ICC extended its lead to 3-0 in the fourth off Katrina Wilson's two-run double and added a fourth run in the fifth on
Arriann Henry's infield RBI-single.

The Rangers' lone run came in the sixth. Micalah Beall singled with one out and was pinch run for by Alyssa Dean who scored two batters later on Jessica Holliday's RBI-groundout.

ICC's Hannah Johnson (10-1) was superb, throwing a complete game six-hitter on 70 pitches and only allowing one run.

Holliday (4-1) took the loss, also in a complete game effort, scattering 10 hits, four runs, a walk and a strikeout.

Eight Lady Indians combined to out-hit Northwest 10-6, with Haley Moore and Henry each going 2-for-4.

(Game 2) Northwest had the first say in game two as Kendall Alford's RBI-groundout scored Hannah Hunter to give the Rangers a 1-0 lead after one.

After four scoreless innings, ICC tied things up in the sixth on Laken Shankle's RBI-single.

Still tied at 1-1 entering the 10th inning, the international tiebreaker rule came into effect by placing a runner on second to start each half inning.

ICC was able to bring Henry in on Katrina Wilson's RBI-single up the middle, making it 2-1 Lady Indians.

Northwest placed Brittany Rochelle on second to start the bottom of the 10th and Alford's RBI-single up the middle scored her to tie things up again at 2-2. ICC faced two more batters before Olivia Owen's RBI-single up the middle brought in pinch runner Bree Thompson for the walk-off win.

Beall (2-0) took credit for the win in relief of Kiley Dunagan, who scattered six hits, two runs and 10 strikeouts in 9.1 innings of work. Dunagan's pair of strikeouts in the first inning gave her 100 for her career, just the seventh Ranger in school history to eclipse the century mark.

Cara Hooper (1-4) took the loss after 5.2 innings of relief work, scattering six hits, four strikeouts and two runs. Cassidy Hardy started for the Lady Indians and tossed 4.0 innings, allowing three hits and one run.

The teams combined for 31 hits in the doubleheader. Alford and Carla Avant each went 3-for-7 and Hunter added three hits. ICC's Wilson went 3-for-7 on the day with three RBIs.

Weather permitting, Northwest will host East Mississippi on Friday, March 27 at 2 p.m. The Coahoma doubleheader has been moved to Saturday, March 28 in Clarksdale at 12 p.m.
