JACKSON – After helping guide Northwest to its most wins since the 1997-98 season and NJCAA Region 23 Semifinal appearance, redshirt freshman center
Aspriona Gilbert has been named Second Team All-MACJC and NJCAA All-Region 23, it was announced Monday afternoon by the league office.
Gilbert was also named to the NJCAA All-Region 23 Tournament Team for her play in Clinton where she averaged 19.5 points and 11.5 rebounds in two games for the Lady Rangers while shooting 71 percent (17-for-24).
On the season, Gilbert had a team-best 13 double-doubles and averaged 17.7 points (fourth in the region) and 8.6 rebounds-per-game, leading the Lady Rangers in scoring in 18 of 26 contests. Her .702 field goal percentage set a new Northwest single-season record and currently leads the NJCAA.
The Myrtle High School product, by way of Austin Peay, scored 20 or more in 10 games, including a career-high 29, twice, against Holmes and Mississippi Delta. She also shot 71 percent from the free throw line and added 24 assists, 22 blocks and 16 steals in 26 starts.
Gilbert will now be nominated for NJCAA All-American honors, attempting to become the first Lady Ranger since Nikita Taylor in 2004-05 to earn the major postseason accolade.
Northwest finished the season 19-7 overall, runner-up in the north division, and appeared in both the state and region tournaments under longtime head coach
Don Edwards.
