Carshava Sutton had a career night with 33 points and 15 rebounds, but it wasn't enough as Northwest couldn't overcome a 20-point first half deficit in a 77-72 loss at Itawamba.
Itawamba improved to 12-8 overall and 8-1 in the north, while Northwest fell to 11-6 and 5-4.
With Northwest leading 8-7 at the 15:52-mark of the first half after back-to-back baskets by
Jasmine Edwards and Sutton, Itawamba put together a game-changing run that the Lady Rangers could never recover from.
Jayla Chills' steal and layup started a 27-6 run for the Lady Indians over the next 8 minutes and pushed ICC's lead out to a game-high 34-14. They led 42-27 at the break after outscoring Northwest's bench 21-0.
ICC maintained a double digit lead the majority of the second half and until the final 3 minutes. Down 75-64, Northwest scored eight unanswered to make it a one possession game, 75-72, with 15 seconds left before ICC iced the game at the free throw line.
Sutton's 33-point outburst (11-for-14 FG, 11-for-14 FT) marked the first 30-point game for a Lady Ranger since Feb. 5, 2009 when Cierra Thomas scored 32 at Northeast. She added 15 rebounds for her fourth consecutive double-double.
Kristina Mays poured in 17 points, eight assists and five rebounds in addition to 10 from
Tenesha Woods and five from
Jacquelyn Brooks and
Halle Knowles.
ICC had five scorers in double figures, led by Chills and Leslie Robinson with 13 apiece.
Both teams shot 43 percent for the night, but ICC's bench outscored Northwest 39-10.
Northwest returns home next Thursday, Feb. 13 to host Mississippi Delta at 5 p.m.
