SENATOBIA – The Northwest tennis teams opened the 2014 season with a bang on Saturday afternoon, sweeping visiting Holmes by 9-0 (women) and 6-3 finals (men) to earn their first team wins in over a decade.
Northwest brought back tennis last season after nearly a decade hiatus.
In the women's match, the Lady Rangers swept the doubles points 3-0 behind a 10-8 win for
Madison Jarrell/
Julia Roberson and 8-2 wins for the team of
Hannah Switzer/
Macey Magee and
Randi Robison/
Derravia Carpenter.
Four of the six singles matches were won in straight sets, with J. Roberson and Jarrell winning in three sets.
On the men's side, Northwest opened with a 2-0 lead before the match even started because of a pair of forfeits by 18th-ranked Holmes at No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles.
Max Stanford/
Joseph Shidler fell 8-5 at No. 1 doubles before an 8-4 win for
Weldon Meng/
Jon Morgan Bell at No. 2 which pulled the match to a 3-1 Ranger lead.
Shidler, Stanford and
Chip Malone then all won singles matches to give Northwest a 6-3 upset victory.
Northwest will return to action on Friday, Feb. 28 at Copiah-Lincoln. First serve is 1:30 p.m. in Wesson.
