Lady Rangers Win Nailbiter over Delta, 66-65

Box Score SENATOBIA – Northwest held visiting Mississippi Delta without a field goal the final 3:36 and Carshava Sutton poured in 27 points and 15 rebounds to help lift the Lady Rangers over the Lady Trojans 66-65 Thursday night.

Northwest all but wrapped up a playoff spot with the victory and improved to 12-6 overall and 6-4 in the north. The Lady Rangers are now 17-3 overall in their last 20 home games. Delta fell to 12-8 overall and 7-3 in the division.

In a back-and-forth game that featured 12 lead changes and 10 ties, Northwest led by as many as eight at the 9:23-mark of the first half and Delta led by as many as five at the 18:50-mark of the second half.

The Lady Trojans took a 27-26 lead into the half.

Neither team led by more than five the entire second half and the game really heated up late with the teams trading baskets on multiple possessions.

After the game's eighth tie at 58-all with 4:23 to play, Delta went up by four after a pair of jumpers from Ashanti Spencer and Niya Head.

Kristina Mays and Sutton each hit a pair of free throws to tie it again at 62-all before Delta went back in front, 65-64, a minute later on a free throw by Aqueshia Kimble.

Northwest then got the go-ahead bucket with 56.4 seconds remaining when Leah Lytle and Sutton each pulled down offensive rebounds which allowed for Sutton to then score a layup for the 66-65 lead. A missed 3-pointer by Halle Knowles with 7 seconds left gave Delta one last possession to try and tie or win the game, but Krystal Nailer's layup hit off the side of the rim as time expired to give the Lady Rangers the win.

Behind Sutton's fifth consecutive double-double, Jacquelyn Brooks and Mays added 10 points apiece, while Lytle chipped in eight. Northwest shot just 34 percent for the game.

For Delta, four of its five starters scored in double figures, led by 18 points and nine rebounds from Nailer. Kimble added 16 and 10, while Spencer and Head each contributed 10 apiece. The Lady Trojans shot 38 percent for the night.

Northwest returns home Monday, Feb. 17 as they play host to division-leading East Mississippi at 5 p.m.
