Box Score SENATOBIA – The Northwest women's basketball team picked up its sixth win of the 2014-15 season with a 78-59 victory over Southern University-Shreveport in the opening game of the Tri-State Classic at Howard Coliseum.
Northwest stayed unbeaten at 6-0, its best start in 21 years, while SU-Shreveport dropped to 3-8.
The Lady Rangers trailed for a good 11 minutes in the first half until freshman
Alyssia King scored off a fastbreak at the 6:47-mark to help Northwest regain the lead at 23-21.
The teams exchanged seven ties in the first half alone and were deadlocked, 32-32 at half.
Sara Lytle scored 13 of her game-high 17 points in the first half and Northwest shot 39 percent from the field, compared to SU-Shreveport's 36 percent.
Out of the half, Northwest opened with a 15-4 run to take a 47-36 lead. A pair of 3-pointers by
Kelsey Brown highlighted the 5-minute spurt for the Lady Rangers and they never looked back.
The lead ballooned to a game-high 22 points with 4:07 to play as Northwest outscored SUS by a 46-27 second half margin for a 19-point win.
Northwest shot 50 percent from the field in the second half, while SU-Shreveport struggled at 31 percent.
Behind Lytle's 17 points,
Tekevanna Young (11 points, 4 rebounds), Brown (11 points, 3 rebounds) and
Bethany Lytle (10 points, 7 rebounds) all finished in double figures and made up 63 percent of the scoring.
The Lady Jags forced 18 Northwest turnovers compared to their 15.
SU-Shreveport's Ceddericka Smith had a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds, while Chaterra Cage (13) and Shondria Scruggs (10) also scored in double figures for the Lady Jags.
Northwest is back in action on Friday at noon against Lawson State (3-2) to close out the 3-day tournament.
