Rangers Drop Heartbreaker to Indians, 1-0

Box Score SENATOBIA – A free kick outside the box after a yellow card came back to haunt Northwest as Dylan Howard found the game-winning goal in the 87th minute to lift Itawamba to a 1-0 victory Tuesday afternoon.

ICC improved to 4-2-1 overall and 2-1-1 in the north while Northwest had a four-match unbeaten streak snapped in falling to 2-1-2 overall and 1-1-1 in the north.

In an evenly-matched game that provided several scoring opportunities, ICC hit the crossbar twice in the first 6 minutes and Northwest squandered a scoring chance in the 10th minute when Zach Farmer missed an open net that would have put the Rangers on top early.

Scoreless into the 61st minute, Itawamba also had an easy chance to score first but Piercen Burchfield sailed a shot over the crossbar from a mere three feet in front of the goal.

Despite just five saves apiece from starting goalkeepers Taylor Thevenot and Cullen Grantham, each save came at a big time and kept the match all square.

The big stat that proved to be the difference was that Northwest was whistled for 18 fouls against just seven for ICC and also two yellow cards, the second costing the Rangers a possible tie or win.

Edgar Fernandez was hit with a yellow at the 86:31-mark and ICC scored the game-winner 10 seconds later.

Northwest will try and bounce back on Friday, hosting East Central at 4 p.m.
