JACKSON – Freshman Marcel Newson of Coldwater, after a big performance against Coahoma, has been selected the MACJC/JUCO Weekly Special Teams Player of the Week.

Newson had three kick returns for 150 yards, including a 91-yard kick return for a touchdown in the first quarter for the Rangers' first score. He also added five tackles in the game.

Through the first three weeks, Newson leads the NJCAA with 269 return yards, is tied for first in TDs and also ranks sixth nationally in return average (29.9). He's on pace to shatter Lawon Debardelaben's school-record 525 kick return yards set last season.

Newson also has nine tackles, a 43-yard interception return for a touchdown and a breakup this season.

Northwest (1-2, 1-0 north) hosts Northeast (1-2, 1-0) Thursday night at Bobby Franklin Field.
