Blue Jays Select Tanner Cable in 26th Round

SECAUCUS, N.J. – Freshman right-hander Tanner Cable of Northwest has been selected in the 26th round by the Toronto Blue Jays on the final day of the 2013 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft Saturday.

"My first reaction was just shock," Cable said. "Seeing my name on the board was just crazy and I jumped up and told my dad and we both couldn't believe it. Up until about an hour before they actually drafted me, I hadn't heard from them (Blue Jays) since the fall. They told me they would try and get me in the later rounds but that there wasn't a guarantee."

Cable, a 6-foot-5, 210-pound product of Southaven High School, appeared in 14 games this season (eight starts) and went 4-4 with a 4.11 ERA, two complete games and two saves. In 47.2 innings of work, he was third on the staff with 42 strikeouts and held opponents to a .249 average.

Cable is the 15th all-time draft selection from Northwest and the third this year behind Cody Reed, second round to the Royals, and Jordan Barnes, 15th round to the Yankees.

Former Ranger Charley Sullivan, a senior right-hander at Alabama, was taken in the 29th round by the Detroit Tigers to give Northwest four total selections in 2013 - the most in school history.
