Kristina Mays tied a career-high with 23 points and five Lady Rangers scored in double figures on the night as Northwest dominated from start to finish in a 102-86 victory Monday night over Northeast.
Northwest snapped a six-game losing streak to the Lady Tigers and improved to 7-2 overall on the year and 2-0 in the north division. Northeast dropped to 3-6 overall and 0-2 in the north.
Ayana Ragin gave the Lady Tigers a 4-3 advantage with a pair of free throws at the 17:12-mark, but Northwest went on a 14-2 run over the ensuing 3:29 to take a double digit lead they would hold into halftime.
Northwest led 53-41 at the half on a season-high 58 percent shooting.
The Lady Rangers continued to pound the ball inside in the second half with the Lady Tigers' lack of size, scoring layup after layup to finish the night with 54 points in the paint against just 24 for Northeast.
As they have in previous meetings the last two seasons, Northeast was able to hang around in the second half thanks to free throws. The Lady Tigers connected on 33 of 44 shots from the charity stripe and pulled within eight, 79-71, with 7:02 to play after making five consecutive free throws.
But from there, Northwest scored seven unanswered thanks to a jumper by
Jasmine Edwards, five points from
Halle Knowles and a layup by Mays and were able to cruise to the finish line as they eclipsed 100 points for the first time since Jan. 18, 2010 at Coahoma.
Behind Mays' 23 points,
Carshava Sutton posted her third double-double of the year with 16 points and 14 boards, Knowles also had a double-double with a career-high 14 points and 10 assists,
Anna Rosenbaum had 12 points and
Tenesha Woods added 11.
Northeast was paced by 18 points off the bench from Daisha Williams, 17 apiece from Jasmine Allen and Teresa Mays and 10 from Antionette Riddle.
Northwest owned a 48-33 edge on the boards, and scored 28 second chance points thanks to 20 offensive rebounds, and won the turnover battle.
The Lady Rangers will return to action on Wednesday, Jan. 8 against Jackson State CC. Tipoff is set for 5 p.m.
