Northwest Pulls Away in 2nd Half at MSCC

Box Score WEST MEMPHIS, Ark. – Leah Lytle scored a career-high 23 points and Kristina Mays added a career-high 17 as Northwest rallied from a halftime deficit for a second straight game to pull away for an 88-67 win at Mid-South.

Northwest improved to 2-0 on the season and won its seventh consecutive over Mid-South who fell to 1-3 on the young season.

In a sloppy first half of basketball from both teams, Mid-South led 36-30 at the break. The teams combined for 43 turnovers, 32 fouls and 40 free throws, while both Northwest head coach Don Edwards and assistant coach Troy Howell received first-half technicals.

The frustration of a poorly-played opening half and the two technicals seemed to get Northwest going in the second half, as the Lady Rangers dominated the final 20 minutes.

Trailing by six, Northwest scored 24 of the first 32 points of the second half and jumped out to a 10-point lead, 54-44, with 13:13 remaining. Halle Knowles, Brittani Biggins, Kristina Mays, Carshava Sutton, Tekevanna Young and Lytle all contributed buckets during the big run.

From there, Northwest would put more pressure on the Lady Greyhounds and closed the night forcing an unprecedented 52 turnovers that led to 63 points on the other end.

After shooting just 32 percent in the first half, Northwest shot 51 percent in the second to close the night at 43 percent. Mid-South was held to 34 percent for the game. The Lady Rangers out-scored the Lady Greyhounds 58-31 in the second half.

Northwest had 10 different players score in the win, with Lytle (23), Mays (17) and Young (13) leading the way. Knowles finished with eight points, eight assists and seven steals.

Mid-South was led offensively by Arica Wallace and Rachell Hughes who had 14 apiece. Wallace added 13 rebounds for a double-double.

Northwest will hit the road again on Monday, traveling to Utica for a 5:30 tipoff against Hinds.
