Box Score SENATOBIA – Trailing by as many as 13 late in the first half, Northwest strung together a 28-7 run into the second half and pulled away late for a 73-62, season-opening win over Southwest Mississippi.
Northwest won its third straight season-opener and fifth consecutive overall against the Lady Bears to improve to 1-0 on the year. Southwest fell to 0-1.
Southwest led for all but 1:50 in the first half, building its lead out to 28-15 with 3:36 left thanks to eight straight points by freshman Talisa Sherman.
But Northwest closed the half hitting 6 of 7 shots and went on a 17-5 run to pull within 33-32 at the break.
The Lady Rangers forced Southwest into six turnovers in the first 3:09 of the second half and the Lady Bears missed nine of their first 10 shots as Northwest took control.
Sophomore
Carshava Sutton went to work in the post and scored at will, while freshman
Tekevanna Young scored 12 of her 14 points in the second half.
Northwest pulled away from a 43-39 lead with 12:12 to go and outscored Southwest 26-12 over the next 9 minutes to stretch its lead out to a game-high 18.
Both teams shot 38 percent for the night and Southwest owned a slight edge on the boards, 48-43.
Sutton had a career-high 24 points and 11 boards for her first double-double, while Young and
Kristina Mays finished with 14 apiece.
Brittani Biggins had nine points and
Halle Knowles had eight assists, seven rebounds and three steals to go along with her four points.
Southwest was led by April Levy and Madison Mault, scoring 12 and 11 points, respectively.
Northwest will hit the road on Thursday, traveling to West Memphis, Ark., for a showdown with Mid-South.
