Northwest Splits Pair at Coca-Cola Classic

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SUMMIT – Northwest split a pair of games at the annual Southwest Coca-Cola Classic, falling to the host Lady Bears 69-66 on Monday before bouncing back on Tuesday to defeat Southern-Shreveport 63-54.

With the split, Northwest moved to 4-2 on the season and is now 5-1 the past three years at the Classic.

In a tightly-contested game with Southwest (3-1), the Lady Rangers led 31-27 at the break, but ran out of gas midway through the second quarter that allowed the hosts to hang on the final 9:39 with the lead.

Both teams shot an identical 42.9 percent on the night, but Southwest shot 50 percent in the second half as April Levy scored 11 of her team-high 15 in the period.

All told, Southwest had four scorers in double figures, owned a 40-33 rebound edge and had 31 bench points.

Northwest was paced by Kristina Mays with 16 points off the bench in addition to 13 apiece from Carshava Sutton and Tenesha Woods. Halle Knowles had 10 assists (no turnovers), five points and five steals.

The Lady Rangers rebounded to Monday's loss in fine fashion against Southern-Shreveport, building their lead to as many as 19 with 10:19 to play before cruising to a 9-point win. Mariah Gilliam hit a buzzer-beater as time expired to make it a single digit game.

Tied at 27 with 5:16 to play in the first half, Northwest closed the period on a 13-2 run to take complete control of the game. Leah Lytle's 3-pointer helped spark the run as Mays, Jasmine Edwards and Jacquelyn Brooks all added points during the run.

Northwest shot just 26 percent in the final 20 minutes, but SU-Shreveport couldn't take advantage as they also shot poorly at 31 percent. It didn't matter, as the lead remained double figures for all but 2 minutes.

Mays had 17 points to lead the Lady Rangers, followed by 12 points and 10 rebounds from Sutton and 10 from Young. Sutton's double-double was her second this season. Knowles had seven assists against one turnover, giving her 17 assists and just one turnover for the two-day tournament.

Northwest will return to action on Monday, Nov. 25 in Senatobia, playing host to Mid-South. Tipoff is set for 5 p.m. at Howard Coliseum. Live stats available at http://sidearmstats.com/northwestms/wbball
