SENATOBIA – Sophomore
Tiesha Tunstall scored a team-high 11 of Northwest's season-high 47 bench points as the Lady Rangers matched last season's 6-1 start with a 66-41 win over Jackson State (Tenn.) Monday night at Howard Coliseum.
In the first meeting between the two teams in nine years (Nov. 4, 2003), Northwest controlled every facet of the game. The Lady Rangers owned a 51-38 rebounding edge, outshot the Lady Generals 35 to 28 percent, forced 24 turnovers and outscored their bench 47-17.
Jackson State (1-6) jumped out to an early 7-2 lead as Northwest opened the game 0-for-8.
Brittani Biggins' basket with 16:06 left in the first marked the Lady Rangers' first field goal and jumpstarted a 26-4 run over the next 10 minutes to give Northwest a convincing lead.
Tunstall scored 10 of her 11 points in the first half as Northwest led 35-18 at the break.
Back-to-back buckets by Nikki McChristian to open the second started another huge 21-5 Northwest run that put the game completely out of reach at 65-32 with 5:59 to play.
Ten of the 14 Lady Rangers who saw the court scored in the game. Behind Tunstall's 11, Shaq Isom scored 10 and had a game-high five assists and Shequana Sledge added seven points.
Jackson State was led by Christy Steele's 13 points and 12 from Victoria Douglas.
Northwest will return to action on Thursday, Nov. 29 against Coahoma. Tipoff is set for 5 p.m.
