Hot-Shooting Lady Rangers Roll at Coahoma, 78-60

CLARKSDALE – Behind four scorers in double figures, including freshman Shaquilla Isom with a game-high 21 points on 9-of-14 shooting, Northwest shot a season-high 48 percent from the floor and snapped a six-game losing streak with a 78-60 win at Coahoma Thursday night.

Northwest evened its season record to 7-7 on the year and got their first north division win in improving to 1-4. Coahoma fell to 7-8 overall and 0-5 in division play.

The Lady Rangers came out on fire to start the game, building an early 11-0 lead at the 14:54-mark and getting points from four different players during the spurt.

Ciara Morgan and Coahoma then snapped out of a 1-for-10 slump to open the game and started draining shots from all over the floor. Morgan scored nine of her 17 first half points during an 11-3 run that pulled the game to 14-11 Northwest at the 12:18 mark.

The Lady Tigers would continue to put the pressure on Northwest and took their first lead at 22-20.

After Northwest pushed its lead back out to 31-24 with 2:54 left in the half on Erica Turner's 3-pointer, Coahoma would close the half on a 10-2 run to take a 34-33 lead at the break.

Back-to-back layups from Shermeka Lewis and Monique Biggins put the Lady Rangers back in front at 37-34 to start the second half, and Northwest would fight off several small Coahoma runs to stay in front.

Leading 61-57 with 7:20 remaining, Northwest pulled away late and closed the game on a 17-3 run to blow open a double figure lead and eventually win by 18 points. The Lady Rangers knocked down 8-of-10 shots down the stretch and held Coahoma without a field goal the final 5:31 of the second half.

Northwest shot a blazing 59 percent in the second half against 32 percent for Coahoma, and closed the night with a season-high 25 assists in the most unselfish effort of the season.

Behind Isom's 21 points, eight rebounds and five assists, Turner added 17 points and Biggins and Tiesha Tunstall each added 11. Biggins also poured in a career-high 17 rebounds to give her a team-best 10th double-double of the year while Turner had four blocks.

Coahoma was led by Morgan's 19 points (17 in the first half), nine from ShaRhonda Vaughn and eight apiece from ShyVuna Johnson and Alexandria Williams.

Northwest will return home on Monday night, playing host to Mississippi Delta (7-8, 2-3 north). Tipoff is set for 5 p.m. from Howard Coliseum and fans can follow live stats (here) and live streaming video (here) courtesy of the Northwest sports information department.
