SUMMIT – Sophomore
Erica Turner's layup with 3.5 seconds left capped an 18-8 run over the final 6:56 and gave Northwest its revenge from their only loss of the season five days earlier, as they knocked off Copiah-Lincoln in thrilling fashion, 55-54, on the final day of the Southwest Coca-Cola Classic.
Northwest improved to 5-1 overall, matching its best start since the 2003-04 season, while Copiah-Lincoln dropped to 4-2 and had a four-game winning streak snapped.
Northwest led for all but 43 seconds in the opening half and by as many as 10 with 10:18 remaining, taking a 28-25 lead into intermission.
Copiah-Lincoln slowly chipped away at the Lady Rangers' lead as the first half dwindled down, and took its first lead at the 16:33-mark of the second half, 31-30, after a pair of free throws from Keosha Bradley.
The Lady Wolves maintained their lead the ensuing 16:29 of the second half, and pushed it out to a game-high nine points, 44-35, with 11:10 remaining. Jasmine James scored eight of her game-high 19 points as part of a 17-5 run for Copiah-Lincoln over 6:12.
But Northwest wouldn't go away, trimming the lead within two on numerous occasions before finally breaking through late.
Trailing 46-37 with 6:56 to play, baskets from four different Lady Rangers seemed to shift the momentum.
Shaquilla Isom scored nine of her team-high 14 points the final 5:43, and Northwest hit 8 of 10 shots down the stretch, while holding Copiah-Lincoln without a field goal the final 2:11.
With Copiah-Lincoln leading 54-53 with 15 seconds left and Chanta Poole on the line shooting 1-and-1, Northwest was guaranteed a final shot to try and force overtime. Poole, however, missed the front end and Isom grabbed the rebound, quickly passing to Turner at halfcourt who took it the rest of the way for the layup and 1-point lead.
After Northwest immediately called a timeout, Copiah-Lincoln then had a chance to win it with 3.5 seconds left. With a great play called by head coach Gwyn Young, the Lady Wolves moved the ball the length of the court, but James' layup at the buzzer was strong and bounced off the glass.
Northwest will return to the hardwood next Tuesday, Nov. 29, when they travel to Mid-South (Ark.) to close out a five-game road swing. The Lady Rangers swept the Lady Greyhounds last year in two games.
