Northwest Tops Hinds, Off to Best Start Since 2003-04 Season

UTICA – Behind a double-double from sophomore Erica Turner, 16 points from freshman Monique Biggins and 15 from freshman Shaquilla Isom, Northwest led from start to finish in an impressive 82-57 road win over the Hinds Lady Bulldogs Thursday night. 

Northwest improved to 3-0 on the year and is off to its best start since the 2003-04 season, while Hinds is still seeking its first win of the year after dropping to 0-3.

Northwest opened with the game's first eight points for an early lead and never looked back, using buckets from four different Lady Rangers.

Turner's back-to-back layups at the 10:51-mark of the opening half gave Northwest a double digit lead, 26-13, that they would ride the rest of the night.

Northwest closed the first half on a 25-6 run to take a 45-19 lead at the break, shooting a solid 53 percent and holding the Lady Bulldogs to a dismal 21 percent shooting.

Domonique Early connected on all three free throws after being fould behind the 3-point line to give Northwest its largest lead of the night, 60-31, with 11:32 to play and Hinds would get no closer than 16 in the second period.

Turner's 16 points, 13 rebounds and five blocks led the way for Northwest, while Isom scored 11 of her 15 points in the second half and Biggins scored 10 of her 16 in the second. Northwest finished the night shooting 46 percent as a team and outscored the Hinds bench 23-8.

Hinds closed the night shooting 29 percent and was paced by three scorers in double figures, including Carmen Smith and Kenya Wright with 12 points and Raven Hubbard with 10 points and 11 rebounds.

Northwest will carry its three-game win streak into Wesson next Thursday night against the 9th-ranked Copiah-Lincoln Lady Wolves (1-1). Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. in Mullen Gymnasium.
