BROOKHAVEN - Despite a better second day of competition at the MACCC Championship at The Club at Ole Brook, the Northwest Mississippi Community College men's golf finished tenth out of 12 teams, seeing their season come to a close.
NWCC shot 43-over as a team. That is a score that is good for Northwest's second best of the season, only behind their 40-over score from the Lou Hart Invitational in March, showing the improvements the team has been able to make this season in Head Coach Adam Payne's first full season at the helm.
The top placing Ranger, Caesar Ingendorf, was a steady presence over both days of competition, shooting four-over on both days for a combined score of eight-over for a 22nd place finish.
On the first day, Ingendorf was able to shine on the front nine, hitting back-to-back birdies on holes four and five. However, he did not garner a birdie on the back nine and instead had three bogies. On the second day, Ingendorf was once again able to shoot two birdies. This time on holes 12 and 14.
After Ingendorf, freshman Cole Elander finished in 33rd place with a score of 11-over. After a phenomenal first day that saw him shoot two-over with birdies on holes one, two, fourteen and seventeen, Elander struggled on day two. Although Elander birdied on holes one and six, he also bogeyed five times and double bogeyed three times resulting in a nine-over score on day two due to the inconsistent round.
Atharv Sharma placed 36th while shooting 12-over. Sharma struggled on the first day. Although he garnered three birdies throughout the day, he also shot five bogies, went three-over on one hole, and went five-over on another hole for a day one score of 10-over.
However, Sharma was able to turn it around on the second day. Even though Sharma bogeyed six holes, one more than the previous day, he did not have any holes that he scored over a bogey. Instead, he birdied on holes four and ten and eagled on hole 16. This allowed Sharma to jump 13 spots up the leaderboard, the most of any Ranger.
Placing right behind Sharma on the leaderboard at 40th, Braden Beverage shot 15-over. Beverage also played consistently over the two days of competition, shooting eight-over with two birdies on day one and shooting seven-over with three birdies on day two.
Landon Masterson only competed on the first day of competition. While Masterson birdied on four holes, he also bogeyed four times, double-bogeyed four times, and went three over once. This accumulated in a score of 11-over.
Taking Masterson's place, Drew Dabbs only teed off on the second day of competition. Dabbs birdied on holes four and six while bogeying four times and double bogeying twice, resulting in a score of six-over.
Due to their 10th place finish, the Rangers failed to qualify for the NJCAA Gulf South District Tournament.
