SENATOBIA -  A win in singles by Brooke Kicker proved to be the highlight in a tough home opener weekend that saw Northwest men's (0-3) and women's tennis (1-2) suffer two losses to Jones College and Wallace State. 

Going into the weekend, the Rangers knew that a perennial conference powerhouse in the Jones College Bobcats would be a tough matchup. The matchup did in fact prove to be terribly challenging for NWCC, with Northwest losing 9-0 in both the men's and women's matches. 

Even though the match against Wallace State on Saturday also resulted in a loss for both teams, the Rangers saw overall improvements and ended the day feeling more positive than the day before.  

"We just competed. There were spots where we didn't necessarily execute, but we did what we were trying to do," head coach Ryan Mounce said. "I can live with that because you have got to put yourself in those positions, and unfortunately, when you're learning something, you're going to screw it up a couple of times." 

The moments of the weekend were two victories in the women's match against Wallace State. Freshman Brooke Kicker and freshman Ryleigh Parker Weatherly were able to get a hard fought 9-7 doubles win. Kicker was also able to show her fighting spirit in a 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 singles victory.  

"Brooke's just a fighter. I mean she just runs everything down. She has a motor that never stops. That's Brooke's best attribute is her never quit attitude," Coach Mounce said.
