ST. LOUIS, MO – Right from the word go the #1 Northwest Mississippi Community College women's soccer team took the momentum from Mineral Area College, taking down the Cardinals 11-0 on Sunday afternoon, picking up their fourth shutout of the season and setting a season high in goals scored along the way.
The effort was led by a hat trick from
Molly Thompson and a four assist game from
Allie Sifford, who also got the scoring started in the third minute when
Lena Scholze got her the ball to break the seal.
Two more goals came in the opening ten minutes, both on assists from Sifford, including the tenth goal of the season from
Emma Jensen in the fifth minute and
Caroline Perkins scoring in her fourth straight game in the eighth to make it 3-0 in the blink of an eye.
McKenzi Rankins added another strike in the 15
th minute on an assist by
Olivia Miller and an unassisted goal from
Amiyah Baker gave the sophomore defender her first goal since the opening game of the season in the 20
th minute to extend the lead to 5-0.
Thompson then took over for the Rangers in the final 15 minutes with goals on assists from
Darby Woolever, and two assists by Sifford in the 30
th, 35
th, and 42
nd minutes of the first half, broken up by a goal from
Caroline Hamm in the 40
th on a pass from
Wenn Sanders to give the Rangers an incredible 9-0 lead going into the half.
Even more Rangers got in on the action in the second half.
Lara Stevens made it a double-digit lead in the 50
th minute on a pass from Baker and the scoring was closed out in the 60
th minute on a strike by
Mary Logan Clark with an assist by
Kassidy McMillan to make it 11-0.
The game was called short in the 70
th minute when the mercy rule came into effect and the Rangers extended their winning streak to five straight. The streak has seen NWCC outscore opponents 42-3 and 14 different players have scored for the Rangers over that stretch.
Defensively the Rangers have also been stellar as goalie
Ann Marie Barton and the back four have been rarely tested with shots on goal, with only eleven total shots on goal through the season.
The Rangers will have a chance to play in front of the home fans for the first time on Tuesday, September 16
, when they host East Mississippi Community College after their final non-conference match against National Park College was canceled.
