TYLER, Texas - A pair of doubles victories were the most notable highlights for Northwest on the second day of the NJCAA Division I Women's Tennis Championships on Sunday.
Following a loss in Saturday's action, the Lady Rangers' tandem of
Macarena Arisio and
Claudia Lopez Chaparro bounced back with an 8-3 win in the flight one consolation draw, defeating Kasey Blagg and Maggie Lang of Southwestern Illinois College. The duo advanced to the quarterfinals of the consolation draw and are slated to face familiar foes in Reine Akombo and Daisi Kukuljan (Meridian).
In the main draw of flight three, the duo of
Allie Rawles and
Mattie Sanders scored a 6-4, 6-0 victory against Sarvin Salehi and Makenna Swasey of Mercer County Community College. With the win, Rawles and Sanders advance to Monday's quarterfinals against Naghely Garcia and Cynthia Wanjala (Cowley Community College) at 12:30 P.M.
Meanwhile, Laura Cámara Blanco and
Meg Daves had a bye in the consolation draw of flight two doubles. The duo will face the Elgin Community College duo of Maria Misiaszek and Amelia Stoner at 2 P.M. on Monday.
Unlike Saturday's slate, the Lady Rangers did not have a great showing in singles competition, dropping all five of its Round of 16 matches in the main draw. Arisio dropped a 6-1, 6-0 decision in flight one to Laura Yans (Eastern Florida State College), while Lopez Chaparro fell 6-1, 6-2 to Sydney Stark (Hillsborough Community College) in flight two.
In flight three, Cámara Blanco fell in a 6-1, 6-1 loss to Yui Suzuki of St. Petersburg College, while Sanders was swept in straight sets to Daniela Vivas Valencia, also of St. Petersburg College.
Rawles capped off singles competition with a 6-0, 6-1 loss to Anna Schmidt (St. Petersburg College) in flight six. The lone singles competitor remaining is
Meg Daves, who had a bye in the consolation draw of flight five. Daves is slated to take on Halee Harper (Coastal Alabama-North) at 11 A.M. on Monday.
Following the second day of competition, Northwest is currently tied for 13th in the tournament standings with Mississippi Gulf Coast. Jones College leads all MACCC programs in seventh place, followed by Hinds in 11th and Itawamba at 21st. At the top, it's a three-way tie between Cowley, Hillsborough and Tyler Junior College.
