ELLISVILLE - The Northwest Community College women's tennis team (8-9) fell by a score of 5-1 to Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College (12-7) after a hard fought Region 23 Third Place match on the campus of Jones College in Ellisville at the Bobcat Tennis Courts on Saturday afternoon.
Going down early in all matches except #1 doubles, NWCC was never able to get a handle on the match. Although it was a small lead, MGCCC entered the singles portion of the match with a 2-1 lead. However, the Bulldogs seemed to have all of the momentum, and it proved to be a challenge for the Rangers to gain any sense of momentum for themselves throughout the match.
"Unfortunately, we didn't perform the way that we had to in spots to win this match," Head Coach Ryan Mounce said. "To beat a team this talented, you have to play well top to bottom, and we played well in spots, but it's got to be a group effort. We just didn't have it as a group today. Sometimes that happens. We've got to learn from it."
A bright spot for Northwest was the dominant 8-0 victory from Claudia Lopez Chaparro and Laura Cámara Blanco on the #1 doubles court. In the first game of the match, Chaparro and Blanco outlasted the Mississippi Gulf Coast doubles team to break serve and never looked back.
Although the team did not play to the best of their ability, NWCC's season is not over. The Rangers await the draw of the NJCAA DII Women's Tennis National Tournament to find out their next opponent.
The NJCAA DII Women's Tennis National Tournament will take place in conjunction with the NJCAA DI Women's Tennis National Tournament in Sumter, S.C. from May 2-6. Draws for the tournament are expected to be announced later in April.
